It's built around the dramatic Torrs — a deep river gorge right in the centre — and the famous Millennium Walkway that hangs through it. Add a lively independent scene of cafés, shops and arts, and two railway stations, and you've got a town that pulls in commuters and creatives in equal measure.
Here's the honest guide to living here.
New Mills has more going on than its size suggests. The Torrs Riverside Park and Millennium Walkway are genuinely special — a slice of dramatic landscape in the middle of town — and the Heritage Centre, independent shops and regular events give the place real character. The Sett Valley Trail runs out towards Hayfield and Kinder Scout for walkers and cyclists. It's a town with a bit of an arts-and-independents streak, and people here tend to be fond of it.
The two stations are the headline for commuters — you can reach both Manchester and Sheffield without much fuss, which is rare for a Peak town.
You'll find everything from stone terraces and millworkers' cottages to larger period houses and modern homes on the edges of town. The strong transport links keep demand healthy, particularly for well-presented homes near the stations. For an accurate read on what your property could achieve, it's best to talk to us.
As a rough guide, homes in New Mills sold for around £300,000 on average over the past year — and unlike much of the area, prices here have been edging up. Terraces went for around £240,000, semis around £330,000, and detached homes nearer £450,000. For an accurate figure on your own home, it's best to talk to us.
New Mills is well served: New Mills Primary School for younger children, plus its own New Mills School for secondary (ages 11–16). We won't quote ratings that go out of date — if schools are driving your move, give us a call and we'll talk you through the catchments honestly.
